Home Practice
What is the Home Practice Policy?
*The Discovery School has developed an innovative home practice policy for students. Students will have a Home Practice Calendar, starting in October, that offers varied suggestions for four days a week (M-Th). In addition there will always be a menu of familiar choices. Families will have flexibility to choose the best way for their child to practice important skills. First Graders should spend approximately 10 minutes a night and Second Graders 20 minutes on Home Practice. If they finish an assignment quickly, encourage them to practice math facts at First in Math or with flashcards, a deck of cards, dice, etc.
* We suggest reading every night. Curl up with your child and read to them, with them or listen to them read. We are happy to offer recommendations and send home books that are "just right" for your child.
Home Practice should be an opportunity for students to feel competent. We want to support them as they get to know themselves as learners and help them choose "just-right" work, work that isn't too easy or too hard. Home Practice should never be a struggle. Please let me know about any challenges.
Students should turn in their Home Practice folders and journals each Friday.
What are the Home Practice Goals at The Discovery School at Four Corners?
1.To allow student choice while practicing academic skills for eventual mastery (i.e. reading, math facts, spelling)
2. To encourage active parent and family participation in student’s learning
3.To provide more flexibility for families by providing a menu from which to choose nightly practice (Monday-Thursday)
4.To reduce use of paper and copying
